Music & Lyrics by Vincent De Jesus
Written by Liza Magtoto
Directed by Maria Isabel Legarda

"The term diva has been used to refer to glass-breaking female singers or extremely demanding and fussy celebrities. However, independent and wildly talented gay men (a.k.a. transvestites) can be divas too. Defined as sassy, glittery and extravagant, male divas wear falsies and big hair on any given day. They sport airtight clothes that show every bit of curve, matched with fierce pumps and airbrushed legs. Most male divas are great/powerful singers with a lot of female qualities. They may think they were born with the wrong body or they may act totally clueless about their genuine biological make-up.

"So imagine a bunch of these strong, confident male divas, a horde of flashy clothes and inch thick make-up living in one of the most conservative and rather historically religious countries, Israel.

"In the Philippine Educational Theater Association's (PETA) latest musical comedy-drama titled Care Divas, five transvestite overseas workers traveled to Israel in the time of theIntifada (Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation).

"Bringing with them the unique brand of warm Pinoy nurturing, they leave their Filipino families to care for elderly Jews. Every day, they wash, feed and entertain their employers as loving caregivers. Come nighttime, the five meet with their mujer's, make-up and sky-high heels to perform as glamorous drag queens in a Tel Aviv club. The day after, they go back to playing the role of caregiver, once again tending to the aged Jews who depend on them for food, human connection and survival.

"At the core of the story is Chelsea (Melvin Lee), who seems to have it all--blessed with a kind employer who teaches him Hebrew and a potential lover who accepts him for what he is. Shai (Vincent De Jesus)the leader of the group, is always haunted by the image of his mother who rejected him for his sexuality. The two are joined by Kayla (Ricci Chan, Jerald Napoles), Thalia (Dudz Teraña, Jason Barcial)and Jonee (Phil Noble, Buddy Caramat) who also release their creativity through performing.

"The five strive to adapt to the different Israeli culture. Their Filipino tongues struggle to learn Hebrew while silently battling the orthodox view on gays. They are always alert, constantly fearing deportation and war.

"Armed by their aspirations (and their pointed stilettos), their true spirits and creativity shine through their performances. They dream of going big time divas and encounter a few problems along the way. But it is through their journey of being a small-time group of singers that they are able to share valuable experiences and friendships that bind strangers in a strange land.

"The creative team behind Care Divas are acclaimed writer Liza Magtoto, multi-awarded composer Vincent De Jesus, prolific director Maribel Legarda, costume designer John Abul, events and theater lighting designer Jon Jon Villareal, visual artist and award-winning set designerLeo Abaya and contemporary dancer and choreographer Carlon Matobato.

Paolo Contis and Vince De Jesus join forces forWipeout

Bong Godinez

Stage actor and composer Vince De Jesus recalled watching the reality game series Wipeout on cable television. The multi-talented Vince, at the time, had no inkling that he would someday host the same program he enjoyed watching repeatedly through several re-runs.

"Interesting kasi, e, masama mang sabihin pero nakakatawa pag nakikita mong sumesemplang... You feel guilty after mong tumawa pero I guess that's the concept of the show," Vince told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last March 5 at Aresi restaurant in Quezon City.

Although Vince is not entirely new when it comes to facing an audience—having done stage plays in the past along with television appearances most notably the situational comedy program, Camera Café—he considers himself as a behind-the-scenes professional rather than lead star material.

"Akala ko wrong number," joked Vince, pertaining to his reaction when he was called up on the phone to host the GMA-7 show.

"Sabi ko ay hindi ko pakakawalan 'to [the hosting job]. Kasi aminin natin ang sarap mag-host lalo na 'pag alam mo 'yong personality mo bagay dun sa show. Ganun ang personality ko kasi madaldal and ang training kasi sa theater improvisation so kung ano lang yong lumabas. Yon nga lang kailangan mong mag-ingat sa sasabihin mo, buti na lang taped."

FIRST TIME HOST. Wipeout is an international reality series featuring 24 daring American contestants who will all go head-to-head through four rounds of hilarious yet physically demanding challenges in the tradition of Takeshi's Castle.

It is not fair though to compare Wipeout to Takeshi's Castle as the former is more modern boasting with new obstacles for maximum fun and challenge.

The "Wipeout Champion" will receive a grand prize of $50,000 along with the honor of knowing that he or she outlasted 23 other contestants.

Joining Vince in hosting Wipeout is actor and new dad, Paolo Contis.

"'Pag napapanood ko siya I've always thought that he was one of the more intelligent actors. Merong natural sense of humor, actually very wicked ang sense of humor niya, very witty, ang bilis. Saka hindi nahihiya, he's not afraid of making fun of himself. He is very comfortable of who he is so I get that cowboy attitude from him," Vince said about Paolo.

Complementing the tandem of Vince and Paolo is StarStruck V Avenger Nina Kodaka who will interview Pinoy viewers about their predictions regarding the turnout of the the challenges as well ask people's opinions about the 24 contestants.

Watch the pilot episode of Wipeout this coming Monday, March 15, before Family Feudon GMA-7.

For the past few months I have been receiving repetitive and annoying text messages from various unregistered numbers advertising their businesses; from vitamins to weight-loss pills to motels. Even loans and sex toys. And recently for five days straight I've received messages from, as the claim, the LEADING INSURANCE COMPANY --- CARITAS.

Caritas' message went this way: 'FINAL NOTIFICATION! Being the Leader in Health Insurance Company (sic), Caritas gives you a chance to get these benefits... blah blah." Since I was expecting a free Health Card as a benefit for one of my projects I thought this was the card I was waiting for. So I called the number up. It said: "Call between 9am-5pm at (02)3865797 and (02) 3866022, look for YHEN MARIANO." Yes, that's YHEN with an "H."

Someone answered, who didn't give her name even if I asked her, and said that Yhen Mariano is still out for lunch. I asked the lady if this was my card from ______ ( I mentioned my employer's name). She said no. She said that the message was a random promo sent to me. (There's that mysterious term again, RANDOM PROMO.)

"Ganoon ba? Okay." I said. "Kung ganoon puwedeng huwag na kayong magpadala ng messages kasi naguguluhan lang ako, miss. I'm also expecting kasi a Health Card due this week." Then the lady from Caritas, who refused to give her name, said: "Di ba binasa mo naman yung message? Eh yun naman pala eh. Bakit request-request ka pa diyan na huwag kang padalan ng messages? Eh di i-disregard mo na lang and message. Tapos!"

WTF!!!?? And she went on telling me: "Kung ayaw mo ang sagot ko eh di huwag ka nang tumawag dito. Hindi ka naman pala interesado sa services namin." I demanded she give me their address and she said "Sige ibibigay ko sa iyo. Ano'ng gagawin mo? Pupunta ka dito? O di sumugod ka!" And she hung up the phone. Without giving me their business address. Superior service only from CARITAS - THE LEADING HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY! !##%%$^%^(&!!!

I managed to get their address, 2nd floor Caritas Bldg. 97 E. Rodriguez. Sa kanila pala yung building na iyon. Malaki.

I called up again, after drinking a cold glass of water (tumaas talaga ang presyon ko day!) and I eventually spoke to the famous YHEN MARIANO mentioned in the text message, the supposed boss, and also the supervisor, a certain Ms. Villegas. Siyempre nag-sorry sila PERO ALAM MO NAMANG WALA NAMAN TALAGA SILANG PAKIALAM DAMDAMIN KO. So I'm sure they just want to get rid of me. And they claim they don't know who answered the phone, kahit sinabi ko kung anong number ang tinawagan ko, anong oras. "Wala ba kayong shifts ng call center agents diyan? Kahit ba gardener puwedeng sumagot ng business phone ninyo?" Hindi daw nila ma-trace kung sino ang sumagot. End of conversation.

They are only polite to us because they need our money. But the moment they find out you are of no value to them THEY TREAT YOU LIKE SHIT.

CARITAS, a word of advice. Every number you send your stupid promos to there's a human being who owns it SO TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT.

How do these people manage to get my number? Does my network provider give my number away?

Interviewed by Lexi Schulze, Vincent DeJesus sings (with his hoarse early morning voice) and talks about the musical comedy which will open February 5 and runs until March 14 at 10am and 3pm.

May 2010 & the makeover of Juan Tamad
By Bibsy M. Carballo (The Philippine Star) Updated October 23, 2009 12:00 AM

Juan Tamad finds himself between Lola Anitan and Diyablo storyteller

MANILA, Philippines - The deadline for new voter’s registration is coming up in a few days on Oct. 31 for the elections on May 10, 2010. The Comelec estimates 1.9 new voters of which only some 900,000 have registered. This is low in comparison to the five million the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) intends to reach. But then, PETA is hopeful. Of our 48 million population, nine million are between 18 to 35 years of age. PETA believes it is this aggressive generally better-informed sector of society that may turn the tide in next year’s elections.

To address this challenge, after the Boto ni Botong in 2000, PETA has come up with a hilarious and informative musical titled Si Juan Tamad, ang Diyablo, at Ang Limang Milyong Boto  directed by Phil Noble which we watched at the PETA Theater. Many in the audience were youngsters, precisely the sector, says PETA president CB Garrucho, that could provide “the swing vote in choosing decent leaders for our country and therefore ensuring good governance.” In the play, Juan finds himself between Diyablo storyteller who doesn’t want change, and Lola Anitan who represents hope and unconditional love.

After decades of fighting the system, many of us have backslid to non-caring, non-dreaming individuals. We have become once again like that good natured, kind, but lazy uninvolved Pinoy character Juan Tamad. Juan himself dissects his nature in the song Para Saan Pa.

Freely translated, the verses go thus: I grew up in a country that has forsaken its dreams. Dreams left by flies to spoil by the wayside. I envy the tree stump that has nowhere to go. It will never know the suffering, never know the pain. Tell me then, why should I leave this life of a bum?

But Juan was by no means alone in this thinking. Even Maribel Legarda, PETA’s artistic director had misgivings. “After 40 years of producing theater, what have we not said or done? Are we repeating ourselves because it seems nothing has changed in the Philippine society….Does our art have the power to bring about this change?” she asks in the souvenir program.

When the project was assigned to the much-acclaimed Vince de Jesus, he was similarly perturbed. Never having voted at 41, he confesses to having lost the appetite. With the massive cheating year after year, the same trapos running, he found the process pointless, even absurd.

“I have to admit that some of Diyablo’s lines are my personal questions on Philippine society. A bit jaded, sarcastic at times, mostly tired and detached. But when I decided to register last August, things kinda opened up took a natural cycle. After registration, I immediately did research on the candidates; became very critical every time they would appear on TV with their glossy ads. I’ve also turned down two candidates’ offer to compose for them campaign jingles. Doing the show as an actor, it is like reliving my life as a Juan Tamad all over again. Masarap maging ignorante dahil kapag hindi mo alam ang problema you are not expected to act on it. Madaling maghugas-kamay. I think everyone has that Juan Tamad moment when they’ve stopped caring and getting involved,” explains Vince.

Not only did he write the play, compose the music and arrange it. His crucial role of Diyablo storyteller represents many of those we know in society, the cynics and who not only refuse to participate but also pull each other down.

On the night we watched, Juan Tamad was played by Victor Robinson who alternates with Marvin Ong, a Trumpets, Repertory Philippines actor. Victor is an Ateneo student, member of the Ateneo Blue Repertory, Ateneo Student Catholic Action, National Ulirang Kabataan Awardee of DepEd, and Most Outstanding Journalist and Student of Region 6.

Playing his Lola Anitan is Joann Co who has appeared in Kuwento ni Lola Basyang, Hunchback of Notre Dame, ZsaZsa Zaturnah among others and teaches at Trumpets Playshop. Lola is the foil to Juan, pushing him to action when he wavers, ever optimistic, always hopeful. To us, she has the most meaningful song in the musical titled Huwag Hayaang Maging Galit Lamang. She sings that after all that has been said and done, after fighting the system and following one’s conscience, it your candidate fails to win the elections, one must not simply be angry and lose hope. One must continue being vigilant of wrongdoings in government and use this anger to open one’s heart for the sake of our future and that of our country.

CB told us they intend to reach as many youths as possible. Robert Seña will start alternating with Vince as Diyablo storyteller starting February until April. It will be interesting to see his interpretation of the complex character.

If there is any positive effect of the recent typhoons, landslides, flooding, and destruction of homes and agricultural land, it will be in awakening the population that we need to take the future into our own hands. The middle classes everywhere were moved to help the downtrodden. At the same time, it has also awakened the victims that the catastrophes were not only acts of God, but of man himself through his irresponsible and greedy treatment of the environment. We have even heard of those in evacuation centers who loudly threw invectives at politician donors even as they accepted their food and rice donations emblazoned with their names and pictures. “Baka akala nyo iboboto naming kayo no? Akala nyo yata, mangmang pa rin kami?” was the general tenor of their reaction. Clearly, the Juan Tamads were undergoing a moral makeover.

According to CB, PETA would need sponsorship of around P1.5-M to tour the production around schools and communities in February and March next year. The amount doesn’t look like a great deal in the light of what we’ve seen the public and responsive companies have shown themselves capable of during Ondoy and Pepeng. The song Bantayan ang Boto Natin  goes…

Again, freely translated, Let us learn from the past. The no-conscience vote is what has ravaged our country. Let us stop taking the easy way out. Let us stop exchanging our future for a vote.
